Mitsubishi Chemical Group is seeking Regulatory Counsel (ESG Lawyer) to join a team committed to excellence, continuous improvement and driving sustainable business results. In this role, you will work with our numerous U.S. businesses  to advise on varied environmental, health & safety, international trade, FARS, and other regulatory issues. Our portfolio businesses include manufacturers of carbon fiber composites, polyester film, and biodegradable resins, as well as architectural cladding panels, medical implantable materials, sporting goods and various other products.  As part of our team, you will deal with an array of regulatory matters, from TSCA and other EPA matters to international trade, environmental and medical end use issues, while also supporting the broader legal needs of the businesses. What You Will Do...

  • Provide substantive regulatory guidance to U.S. businesses, leveraging established expertise in environmental, TSCA, OSHA and other core areas
  • Evaluate and advise on international trade and government contracting requirements such as ITAR, FARs and related regulations, effectively further building the regulatory practice group of the department (not including our pharmaceuticals business)
  • Guide teams serving the medical, food contact and other regulated or risk-related end uses, including review of marketing materials
  • Evaluate business-specific regulatory functions that can be consolidated or centralized
  • Develop and support implementation of optimized regulatory policies and associated procedures
  • Review and support existing regulatory audit system, implementing and expanding audits as warranted
  • Negotiate and review contracts, and support other legal team members on contracts with regulatory provisions and impact
  • Conduct periodic employee trainings and presentations on relevant regulatory legal and compliance issues
  • Research complex and nuanced regulatory legal issues; create, update and maintain actionable guidelines and best practices
  • Manage outside counsel retained on select matters
  • Review and resolve regulatory disputes and investigations in concert with in-house and external litigation and regulatory counsel 
  • Support M&A related activities, including associated regulatory diligence
  • Provide guidance and supervision to a Regulatory Compliance department member in the creation and implementation of enhanced regulatory compliance programs for the region
  • Other duties as assigned.

What You Will Have...

  • J.D. with strong academic credentials from an accredited law school
  • Minimum of 7+ years of legal experience in regulatory and compliance law
  • Trade compliance experience at a major law firm or in-house, including advising on compliance with laws, regulations and policies
  • ESG – new roles at companies… create and implement the regional ESG practice area (which is inclusive of regulatory practice).
  • Admitted, active and in good standing with the state bar where practicing, or admitted in another state with in-house counsel licensing, as determined by the General Counsel according to state law and
  • This position will have access to U.S. export-restricted materials. A successful candidate must be a U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident, lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum, or able to obtain U.S. authorization from the Dept. of State or the Dept. of Commerce to access such materials
  • Demonstrated, in-depth expertise in core EHS regulatory compliance as applicable to a U.S. manufacturer
  • Strongly preferred knowledge of international trade regulatory law
  • Experience independently drafting and negotiating a variety of agreements
  • Confident ability to convey legal advice clearly, patiently, and effectively to non-legal colleagues and non-native English speakers
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Strong presentation skills and comfort level leading discussions relating to legal risk at the executive level
  • Ability to work effectively with employees at all levels
  • Strong and astute negotiator with good judgment and strong problem-solving skills
  • Ability to build productive, trusting relationships with personnel at supported businesses by obtaining a strong knowledge of the products and objectives of those companies
  • Occasional travel for high priority matters or compliance training as warranted
  • High ethical standards and professional integrity

The salary range for this position is $111,300 - $166,900. Factors such as scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education/training, job-related skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and business considerations may influence base pay offered. This salary will be subject to a geographic adjustment (according to a specific city and state), if an authorization is granted to work outside of the location listed in this posting.
