Job Purpose

The Senior Buyer expedites the ordering and delivery process for commodities or services through the use of automated procurement systems and assures invoice payment by monitoring the process from initiation of a purchase order through the receipt of the goods or services and billing from the vendor or supplier. This role will communicate and work with internal customers (requisitioners) and external customers (suppliers). 

Principal Accountabilities
  • Purchase goods, materials, components or services in line with specified cost, quality and delivery targets.
  • Ensure continuous supply of required goods and materials and communicate any supply problems which may pose a risk or impact on business operations.
  • Researches, analyzes, and forecasts current and future buying trends, markets, styles, and products with attention to specified target market and demographics.
  • Research and evaluate areas of opportunity and reduce costs where possible.
  • Deliver briefs, updates and reports as and when required.
  • Develop creative and innovative procurement processes.
  • Develop ideas and strategies to improve operational efficiency, add value, aid business performance and work towards a strategy of continuous improvement.
  • Negotiate contracts, improved prices and terms of business with suppliers and review opportunities to make business savings utilizing negotiation and procurement best practice tools and methods.
  • Assess and evaluate suppliers and undertake performance reviews to ensure contract compliance and manage performance improvement activities.
  • Ensure that a professional and consistent approach is taken in relation to all supplier relationships.
  • Ensure compliance to company guidelines, purchasing policies and procedures during supplier negotiations and contracts award process.
  • Explore alternate sources for goods and materials.
  • Assess contracts, terms and quotations from potential suppliers. Further assesses financial risks of purchases.
  • Prepare purchase orders in line with final negotiations with selected suppliers and in line with organizational targets and requirements.
  • Undertake research on and evaluate existing and new suppliers.
  • Contact suppliers to resolve price, quality, delivery or invoice issues
  • Will work with Inventory Manager to achieve Goals and Objectives set by MPA
  • Will work with R&D on raw material supply and cost based on product development
  • May attends trade shows, product exhibitions, and conferences to maintain understanding of new products and trends.
  • May act in place of the purchasing manager as required and authorized.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge / Skills / Experience


  • Four-year degree in business or related field or equivalent work experience (10-12 years) in purchasing or supply chain management.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities 

  • Five years or more of purchasing experience required. Experience purchasing chemicals and plastic resin preferred.
  • Computer proficiency: SAP, Microsoft Office Products.
  • Strong negotiation, communication, interpersonal and influencing skills Familiar with Contracts, NDAs, MSAs and all agreements.
  • Highly skilled at building and maintaining effective and productive relationships with key stakeholders and suppliers
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment. Strong level of professionalism and confidentiality.  Demonstrated attention to detail and ability to set priorities.
  • Analytical, numerically astute with strong proven problem-solving abilities
  • Interpersonal skills in developing ethical & productive internal & external (vendor) contacts
  • Results orientated with the ability to plan and deliver against project deadlines
  • Customer oriented and focused.
  • Excellent presentation and computer skills - Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Extrusion tooling, process knowledge preferred but not required.
  • Familiar with automotive OEM specifications, material requirements and the material approval process required.
  • Capable of working in a team based technical environment, as well as, the ability to work individually with minimal supervision.
  • Must be a self-directed team player and have a high level of motivation.
  • Capable of working within a changing environment with an ability to prioritize issues with minimum resources.
